A Comparison of Sunderland and Aston Villa’s Net Spending Against Premier League Competitors This Season

Sunderland is set to face Aston Villa this weekend, aiming to capitalize on their strong run and European aspirations, fueled by considerable investment. The newly promoted Black Cats have complemented their momentum with significant spending.

As per Transfermarkt, Sunderland’s net spend of €155.59m positions them sixth in the Premier League this season, trailing Arsenal (€280.30m), Liverpool (€263.40m), Manchester City (€199.52m), Tottenham (€182.90m), and Manchester United (€176.50m).

This financial outlay was preceded by a lavish summer, with acquisitions including Brian Brobbey, Chemsdine Talbi, and Habib Diarra, plus experienced players like Granit Xhaka, Robin Roefs, and Noah Sadiki. Some of the investment was offset by the sales of Jobe Bellingham to Dortmund and Tom Watson to Brighton.

In contrast, Brentford, Brighton, Wolves, and Bournemouth reported profits of €50.06m, €63.15m, €81.10m, and €130.31m, respectively, while Chelsea's losses were minimal following their sales of Noni Madueke, Christopher Nkunku, Joao Felix, and Lesley Ugochukwu. Villa sits at €12.65m as they navigate PSR limits.

Tottenham's spending is notable given their recent 1-0 loss at the Stadium of Light, leaving them in the relegation zone with six games to go. Sunderland currently occupies 10th place with 46 points after 32 matches, just two behind sixth-placed Chelsea and six off Liverpool, who hold the final Champions League spot.
