Tottenham’s Battle Against Relegation Takes a New Turn with Rescheduled Aston Villa Trip
The challenging trip to Villa Park has been rescheduled following Aston Villa's advancement to the Europa League semi-finals.
Tottenham will now face Aston Villa at a later date after Villa’s impressive victory over Bologna.
Originally scheduled for May 2, Spurs were supposed to play Unai Emery's side in a critical match for their Premier League survival.
The match will now occur on May 3, moved to 7pm after Villa’s 7-1 aggregate win, highlighted by a 4-0 triumph at Villa Park.
Spurs are engaged in a relegation battle, currently two points away from safety with six games left.
The schedule change means Spurs will play after key relegation rival West Ham face Brentford, but before Nottingham Forest takes on Chelsea.
The arrival of Roberto De Zerbi as manager has yet to yield results, as Spurs fell to a 1-0 loss at Sunderland during his debut.
They will be looking for their first league win of the year against Brighton this weekend, followed by a vital match against bottom-placed Wolves next Saturday.
De Zerbi's side urgently needs positive results as they head to Champions League-aspiring Villa on the first weekend of May, with their Premier League status hanging in the balance.
Meanwhile, Villa is well-positioned to secure a Champions League spot next season, despite recent struggles.
Despite just one win in their last six league matches, Villa remains seven points clear of sixth-placed Chelsea and three ahead of Liverpool in fifth.
Villa is also favored to reach the Europa League final, with an all-Premier League semi-final against Nottingham Forest approaching.
The Premier League’s decision to alter the fixture has raised concerns among traveling fans, prompting criticism from the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust regarding the lack of consideration shown by the league and broadcasters.
“Once again the Premier League and TNT Sports have shown contempt for supporters,” THST stated to Standard Sport.
“By scheduling this match at 12.30pm on Saturday and then moving it to Sunday at 7pm, supporters face tremendous difficulty planning travel to and from the match. Supporters working on Monday morning face potentially travelling for hours late on Sunday night.
“The issue (of European progress) was known when this match was moved to an early KO on Saturday, and there is no reason why it could not have been immediately scheduled for Sunday night, allowing supporters to make an informed decision before applying for tickets.
“We call on all football leagues and TV companies to have far more consideration for match-going fans than they have proved themselves capable of so far.”
