Forest reaches all-Premier League semi-final after overcoming 10-man Porto on
Nottingham Forest secured their first European semi-final since 1984 with a narrow 1-0 victory against ten-man FC Porto.
Vítor Pereira was without Elliot Anderson due to the unfortunate passing of his mother, yet Forest performed admirably in his absence.
The home side got off to a fantastic start when Jan Bednarek was shown a straight red card for a studs-up challenge on Chris Wood – though it was an accidental foul, the decision was justified.
Just five minutes later, Forest took a 1-0 lead on the night and a 2-1 advantage on aggregate. Morgan Gibbs-White found space to shoot, and his effort deflected off Pablo Rosario, wrong-footing Diogo Costa.
Pereira was soon forced to make a change as Chris Wood, who had just returned from injury, had to come off, replaced by Igor Jesus.
Forest had several opportunities to extend their lead before halftime, with Murillo going close from distance and Nicolás Domínguez heading just wide.
Despite being a man down, the visitors improved in the second half and nearly equalized when William Gomes struck the bar.
Forest faced more injury woes as two players needed to be substituted near simultaneously; both Murillo and Calum Hudson-Odoi, who had come on in the second half, were replaced.
Igor Jesus had two solid chances to secure the win, but Diogo Costa kept him at bay.
Then, tension rose at the City Ground as Alan Varela hit the crossbar from the edge of the area in the 84th minute.
Ultimately, Forest managed to hold on and set up a semi-final clash against fellow Premier League side Aston Villa.
