West Brom Scores Big with Impressive Free Transfer That Energized the Team

The Baggies received exceptional value from Argentine midfielder Claudio Yacob.

West Bromwich Albion has completed numerous budget-friendly transfers over its history.

These transfers proved especially beneficial during Albion’s eight-year stay in the Premier League from 2010 to 2018.

One notable acquisition was the signing of midfielder Claudio Yacob in the summer of 2012.

Yacob emerged as a vital figure during his tenure at B71, reinforcing the defensive line and contributing to the club's success in the top tier.

Yacob joined West Midlands in July 2012, marking his debut in English football, and quickly became a crucial part of Albion’s system throughout his six-year tenure.

Despite fans being unfamiliar with the combative midfielder at first, he soon demonstrated his capabilities.

He made his debut on the opening day of the 2012-13 season against Liverpool, where the Baggies won convincingly 3-0. He delivered an impressive performance throughout the season, helping Steve Clarke's side achieve an eighth-place finish with 30 appearances in the Premier League.

Yacob was not known for his flair or scoring; instead, he excelled in positioning, consistently providing a strong defensive shield with his tackling and work ethic.

The 2013/14 season presented challenges for the Baggies, narrowly avoiding relegation, but Yacob remained crucial, netting his only league goal in a 1-1 draw with Arsenal.

Following a tough 2014-15 season where he made just 20 appearances under Tony Pulis, Yacob bounced back the following season.

In 2015-16, he played 34 league games, starting 33, proving his worth to Pulis with his physical presence and unwavering commitment to strengthening the defense.

His performance earned him a two-year contract extension in summer 2016, and during the 2016/17 season, he played 33 matches as Albion finished in the top half of the table.

Yacob’s sixth season ended disappointingly with limited playing time under Tony Pulis, Alan Pardew, and Darren Moore, making just 16 appearances. Albion finished rock bottom of the Premier League without him.

Following relegation, Yacob departed The Hawthorns after 160 top-flight appearances to join Nottingham Forest while remaining in England.

Claudio Yacob's influence extended both on and off the pitch

Though his time ended on a low note, Yacob will be fondly remembered at The Hawthorns as a dedicated and skilled professional who contributed significantly to keeping Albion competitive in midfield.

His uplifting presence shone through, often engaging with fans and teammates alike.

His vibrant personality was highlighted in a 2024 video shared on West Brom’s official YouTube channel, where he expressed his enduring affection for the club and the memories created during his time in B71.

The responses to that clip reflect the appreciation held for Yacob among the West Brom community, with him embodying the spirit of the club in the blue and white stripes.

The chant “He’s magic, you know, you’ll never get past Claudio” was frequently heard at The Hawthorns, and Yacob will undoubtedly be regarded as one of Albion’s greatest bargain buys due to his substantial contributions.
