Sunderland Takes Charge After Bold Decision by Regis Le Bris
Regis Le Bris’ decisive selection choices were validated as Luke O’Nien excelled in Sunderland’s 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, moving him up the club’s season minutes leaderboard.
As per Sunderland Echo, this was only O’Nien’s ninth Premier League appearance and third start this season, with three starts in the last four matches. He has also participated in all of the last five games across competitions.
O’Nien made six clearances, one interception, won two out of four duels, completed 90% of his passes, and succeeded in all his dribbles, contributing to a clean sheet. Le Bris expressed confidence in O’Nien, admitting he was initially uncertain about O’Nien's competitiveness at this level but commended his performance, leadership, and impact on the team.
O’Nien now has 317 Premier League minutes under his belt, surpassing Dennis Cirkin, Melker Ellborg, and Nilson Angulo. He could potentially overtake the injured Romaine Mundle with a start against Aston Villa. However, he still trails the most-used players, headed by Robin Roefs at 2,610 minutes, followed by Trai Hume at 2,593, Omar Alderete at 2,446, and Enzo Le Fée at 2,396.
Le Bris also hinted at the possibility of Hume and Chemsdine Talbi returning to the lineup after both were omitted despite impressive derby performances against Newcastle United. He emphasized the significance of cohesion among a core group of 14 or 15 players, noting that the starting eleven could be adjusted if that united mindset prevails.
