Mikel Arteta aims for Arsenal to leverage Sporting victory as motivation for Man City clash.
Mikel Arteta stated that Arsenal's advancement to the Champions League semi-finals can provide a significant boost for their crucial Premier League match against Manchester City.
Arsenal secured their second consecutive last-four finish on Europe's biggest stage with a 0-0 draw against Sporting Lisbon at the Emirates, following Kai Havertz's stoppage-time winner in the first leg.
They will face Atletico Madrid over two legs for a spot in this season's final.
Despite their recent loss to Bournemouth, Arsenal demonstrated resilience, with Sporting’s Geny Catamo nearly scoring in the first half.
The goalless draw is seen by Arteta as a renewed source of hope ahead of their visit to the Etihad Stadium.
“One hundred per cent,” Arteta affirmed when asked if this result could propel them against Pep Guardiola’s team.
“This is a massive push to win the semi-final of the Champions League. It’s extremely tough, and we know what we’ve accomplished. We fully deserve it, and we’re going to enjoy it because we have earned it.
“My message (to the players) was gratitude to them. I appreciate the effort and commitment they’ve shown.
“There’s a lot of work behind it. We’ve achieved something unprecedented in our club's 140-year history, highlighting the difficulty of this accomplishment, especially while missing key players.”
Arteta remains without Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, and Jurrien Timber due to injury, and Noni Madueke is also uncertain for the match after limping off with a knee issue.
Prior to Wednesday’s match, Arsenal faced criticism following their unexpected 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth, along with a loss in the Carabao Cup final against City and an FA Cup elimination by Southampton.
For the second consecutive season, Arsenal stands as the sole Premier League representative in the Champions League semi-finals.
Arteta noted: “There is a reason we are the only English team in the competition; this league and schedule can be extremely demanding.
“We are not perfect and there are areas for improvement, but there is significant value in what these players have accomplished.”
Sporting head coach Rui Borges felt his team created sufficient opportunities to push for extra time.
He expressed: “Proud is the right word for the players regarding their efforts in these two games.
“I believe we deserved more and even extra time. The character and determination to compete against one of the best teams in Europe were remarkable.
“We had the best chances, and Arsenal did not create many threats in our penalty area, both in Lisbon and here.”
