Henry chuckles at Arsenal’s prospects against Man City as Arteta advised to alter ‘everything’ on.
Thierry Henry has advised Mikel Arteta that “everything” needs to change for Arsenal to overcome Manchester City, emphasizing that Declan Rice’s expression after the Sporting draw encapsulates the situation.
The Gunners managed a goalless draw at the Emirates, securing their place in the Champions League semi-finals, where they will face Atletico Madrid, following Kai Havertz’s late goal in the first leg for a 1-0 aggregate win.
This was yet another underwhelming display from Arteta’s side, continuing a concerning trend following their Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City, the FA Cup elimination by Southampton, and the Premier League defeat to Bournemouth.
Not the ideal lead-up to their match against Manchester City, which many see as a title decider on Sunday.
A City victory would level them with Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table, assuming they win their game in hand.
When asked about his expectations for his former team in the significant clash, Henry pointed to Arteta’s impassioned press conference prior to the Sporting match, where he urged his players to show “fire”.
“I want to see that fire at the Etihad,” Henry told CBS Sports.
“That’s what I want to see. It's easy to talk; go there, at Man City, and deliver.
“I do believe in what I see, I believe in Arteta, ‘the fire’, but when you talk like that, you have to back it up. I didn’t see that tonight.
“We’re through, so happy, semi-final; I never won it, but I did win the league, so go and win at Man City. I want to see that fire there. I believe in Mikel, yes, but show it.”
On how he would prepare for the game against City, Henry said: “Not like tonight, or against Bournemouth, or Brighton away, or Mansfield, or everything I’ve seen this season.”
When asked if the performance against Sporting would suffice to overcome City, Henry laughed and responded: “The Man City I’ve seen recently? We’re talking about the team that won four in a row; Liverpool came in between that if not, it would have been more.
“I truly believe we can win the league this year. This is the biggest chance in your life to prove to yourself, as a team, that we can.
“Then people won’t use the word I’d rather not mention.
“I believe personally, but sitting in a chair for CBS, there’s nothing more I can do. Now I heard ‘fire’, and I want to see that fire at the Etihad.
“If you look at Declan Rice's face after the game, despite the many smiles around, his expression lingered with me. Perhaps I need to talk to him to understand what he was thinking. This is a guy who just helped reach the semi-final of the Champions League.
“There’s no positive or negative here. We’re in a Champions League semi-final, which is a significant achievement historically, and I’m thrilled about it. But against City… I want the team to win, not just draw, make a statement.”
