Newcastle: Howe Might Step Down Due to Summer Transfer Strategies with Two Premier League Champions Targeted
Eddie Howe may consider resigning at the season's end, with two Premier League winners identified as potential replacements for Newcastle.
Newcastle's recent form has been poor, with seven losses in their last ten Premier League matches, alongside defeats to Manchester City in both domestic cups and an 8-3 aggregate loss to Barcelona in the Champions League.
CEO David Hopkinson did not provide reassurance regarding Howe’s future during the international break. Clarifying his remarks implies he believes the 48-year-old might be ‘leaving’ by season’s end.
While many expect he would be sacked if he exits, Howe's previous achievements—guiding Newcastle back into the Champions League last season and ending a 70-year trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup—give him some leeway, and TEAMtalk reporter Graeme Bailey has indicated that he might leave on his own terms.
Reports suggest that Howe has been seeking assurances from the club’s hierarchy regarding the summer transfer window, and if support isn’t forthcoming, he may consider stepping down from his role at St James’ Park.
The report further states:
‘Newcastle are understood to be preparing for a significant squad reshaping this summer, with the possibility that key players may need to be sold in order to rebalance finances and evolve the team. While the club would want Howe to oversee that process, there is growing awareness internally that he could opt to take a break from management, as he did following his departure from Bournemouth in 2020.’
Amid this uncertainty, intermediaries have reportedly begun discussions, showcasing potential replacements to Newcastle’s leadership.
Jose Mourinho and Roberto Mancini, both Premier League champions with Chelsea and Manchester City respectively, are reportedly ‘open to the project’, and Newcastle's PIF owners view their experience as a means to enhance the club's global presence.
Additionally, Andoni Iraola and Oliver Glasner are set to be available this summer and are ‘firmly on the radar’, along with Fulham’s Marco Silva and Porto’s Francesco Farioli, who are ‘admired internally’.
Howe stated before the 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace that he remains “100% committed” to Newcastle.
“For me, nothing has changed,” he said.
“I’m absolutely 100% committed to the job. That commitment has never wavered from my side. I’ve been working during the break to make sure that we come back a stronger team.
“I think, in this day and age, it’s very difficult to look too far in the long-term. I can only look to these seven games and make sure that we perform at our very best level.”
