Glenn Hoddle comments on unexpected Liam Rosenior dismissal as Chelsea finds itself in a tough situation
Glenn Hoddle believes Chelsea will retain Liam Rosenior as head coach, although he acknowledges concerning signs are emerging.
Chelsea suffered their fourth consecutive Premier League loss on Saturday, falling 1-0 at home to an in-form Manchester United.
This defeat leaves Chelsea in sixth place, four points adrift of fifth-placed Liverpool in the battle for a Champions League spot. Arne Slot’s side could extend that lead to seven points with a win in the Merseyside derby on Sunday.
Rosenior took over as Chelsea manager in January, but has already faced criticism from some fans.
Despite this, Hoddle is optimistic the club will support the 41-year-old coach, though he warns that a poor start to the next season could jeopardize Rosenior’s position.
“They’re in a really sticky position,” Hoddle stated to Premier League Productions.
“For Liam to maintain his position until the end of the season, I believe they’ll provide that opportunity, but he must close the season positively with some wins.
“The rationale behind bringing him in is that he is a young manager contributing to their long-term project, and I think they’ll give him a chance.
“However, he must begin securing victories; even if they miss out on the Champions League, they’re in the FA Cup semi-final and have a trophy in sight still.
“I believe they’ll stick with him through pre-season and start next season with him, but he needs to begin positively; otherwise, he could find himself in a precarious situation.”
Following the loss to United, Rosenior expressed uncertainty about the ramifications of not qualifying for Champions League football next season.
“The honest answer is I don’t know. We’re still fighting and will discuss that at the end of the season, whatever the outcome,” Rosenior conveyed.
“Regarding the game tonight, it’s incredibly tough because people don’t want to hear me talk about how well we performed without winning. Our objective is to win.
“There are various elements of our underlying process that indicate if we remain committed, we will win games.
“It looks challenging right now, but the reality is Manchester United managed to take one shot, score, and win 1-0 against 10 men, which shouldn’t happen.”
