Chelsea 0-1 Manchester United: Matheus Cunha’s Goal Dashes Blues’ Champions League Aspirations

Blues fail to score for a fourth successive Premier League match.

Manchester United claimed a 10-point lead in the race for the Champions League with Matheus Cunha‘s first-half goal securing a 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, a result that severely impacted Chelsea's ambitions for a top-five finish.

Cunha rifled in the winner with United's only shot on target as home fans' anger at the running of their club reverberated around the ground, following a massive street protest against owners BlueCo that took place ahead of kick-off.

This marked Chelsea's fourth consecutive Premier League defeat and a fourth match without a goal.

They sit four points behind Liverpool in the quest for a top-five position, having played one game more, with five teams within striking distance, putting them at serious risk of missing out on European qualification entirely.

For Michael Carrick's United, there are no such worries. This was a welcome return to form after one victory in four matches, and though they offered little of their own threat besides the goal and Chelsea hitting the crossbar twice, they were sufficiently organised and determined to frustrate their hosts.

Their greater confidence ultimately prevailed, in stark contrast to Chelsea's visibly diminishing belief.

Rosenior's side generated numerous chances but failed to capitalize, conceding an easily avoidable goal.

Cole Palmer sought a penalty after a challenge from Ayden Heaven, and Estevao had a close opportunity stepping in from the left only to shoot beyond the far post.

The Brazilian was forced off in the 14th minute with a hamstring injury after appearing to pull up inside the box.

Despite some discomfort, he left the pitch unaided. Alejandro Garnacho entered to a chorus of jeers from the away fans but was largely kept in check by his former United teammate Diogo Dalot.

Enzo Fernandez skillfully maneuvered past two United defenders to create a curling shot that sailed just wide—Chelsea's best opportunity of the first half.

Liam Delap struggled again in the absence of the injured Joao Pedro, having a goal rightly disallowed for offside after heading Neto's cross.

Delap and Fernandez failed to convert a golden opportunity from an excellent cross by Pedro Neto.

Chelsea briefly went down to ten men when Manchester United scored; Wesley Fofana had exited the pitch after receiving treatment for a rib injury, leaving Cunha unmarked as he latched onto Bruno Fernandes's pull-back and fired into the corner.

Delap struck the bar with a header from Neto's cross ten minutes into the second half, and Palmer narrowly missed from Malo Gusto's delivery as Chelsea picked up the pace.

Robert Sanchez saved a potential own goal from Fofana after Fernandes's shot on a rare United counter-attack. Chelsea began to assert dominance and hit the bar again following a misdirected touch on a cross from Noussair Mazraoui.

The deafening boos at full-time echoed the discontent, leaving Chelsea's future in question.
