Arteta Shares Key Lessons Learned from Past Premier League Title Races

Mikel Arteta discussed lessons learned from past title races before the upcoming clash at the Etihad Stadium.

In the 2022/23 season, Arsenal held the league lead for most of the time but were ultimately surpassed by Manchester City, who took the title.

They secured only 12 points from their last nine matches, which allowed Pep Guardiola’s side to claim the championship and extended Arsenal’s wait for another Premier League trophy.

In the subsequent 2023/24 season, Arsenal again finished second to Manchester City, who rallied to surpass them once more.

Arteta and his squad want to avoid a repeat of these experiences, but recent results have put them in a precarious position following their 2-1 defeat by Bournemouth, which has allowed City to narrow the gap.

City could further decrease the deficit when they meet Arsenal on Sunday.

When asked about insights gained from prior title races, Arteta replied succinctly: “Get all the players available in April.”

He emphasized, “I’ve said this many times; that’s the key lesson. In April and May, having the entire squad available with your best players on the pitch significantly increases your chances of winning.”

“It’s as simple and as difficult as that.”

The Arsenal manager is currently contending with several injuries to key players, including Bukayo Saka, who will miss the City clash. Captain Martin Odegaard, along with defenders Riccardo Calafiori and Jurrien Timber, are also sidelined, and Mikel Merino's return from a foot injury remains uncertain.

With only six games remaining, it is uncertain if Arteta's aim of having a fully fit squad will materialize, but Arsenal will need to rely on their available players to maintain their lead.
