Transfer Radar 2025: The Athletic’s Comprehensive Guide to Potential Player Moves

Welcome to The Transfer Radar.

At every major tournament, eScored provides a scouting guide featuring players to keep an eye on. This winter, we’re excited to unveil a revamped version of The Radar — one that hones in on transfers for 2025.

We started with 25 players anticipated to attract interest from major clubs throughout Europe as the January and summer transfer windows of 2025 approach. As of December 19, we’ve added three more players to our watch list. While this does not guarantee their transfer, our reporters have identified them as hot topics within recruitment departments. Even as most fans are turning their attention to the January window, clubs are already contemplating next summer’s strategies.

To compile this information, eScored’s journalists engaged with sources who, unless otherwise specified, requested anonymity to protect their relationships or because they were not authorized to speak about the players.

In this report, we cover the current situation for Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Benjamin Sesko, Martin Zubimendi, Nico Williams, and more.

We now have a total of 28 players listed in the Transfer Radar.

There are custom data visualizations, with data for our original 25 players accurate as of Friday, November 29. The three additional players have been updated through December 19.

Click to expand and collapse each card, and feel free to use the filters to sift through the players.

This effort has been a massive undertaking by our talented team of writers, data specialists, editors, designers, and engineers; our gratitude extends to everyone involved.

The writers who contributed include: David Ornstein, Sebastian Stafford-Bloor, Anantaajith Raghuraman, James Pearce, Jacob Whitehead, Simon Hughes, Dermot Corrigan, Thom Harris, Joshua Kloke, Sam Lee, Mario Cortegana, Stuart James, Ahmed Walid, Tim Spiers, Mark Carey, Elias Burke, Matt Woosnam, Nick Miller, Patrick Boyland, Pol Ballus, Simon Johnson, Liam Tharme, Philip Buckingham, James Horncastle, Jack Pitt-Brooke, Jeff Rueter, and Ali Rampling.

In January, Ademola Lookman will have suitors, but Atalanta will likely resist offers as they pursue their Serie A title ambitions and aim for Champions League progress — unless an irresistible bid comes in.

It is more probable that Lookman leaves next summer with two years remaining on his contract. The 27-year-old attacker is not anticipated to extend, making his exit more plausible if suitable offers are made.

Atalanta’s asking price is expected to be around £30 million ($38 million).

Interest continues to mount from leading European clubs; however, the Premier League interest lags behind that of Italy and other parts of Europe. Paris Saint-Germain previously expressed interest, likely influenced by Lookman’s earlier stints at Charlton Athletic, Everton, Leicester City, and Fulham.

In December, Lookman was awarded African Footballer of the Year.

David Ornstein and James Horncastle

What else do I need to know about him?

Lookman etched his name into history by netting a hat-trick in the 2024 Europa League final, delivering a performance that dashed Bayer Leverkusen’s dreams of an unblemished season while leading Atalanta to their first European trophy.

This feat marked only the sixth hat-trick scored in a UEFA competition final. Alfredo Di Stefano achieved it once and Ferenc Puskas twice. Lookman shared with eScored in an interview at the start of this season his excitement, noting he was proud to be the first African player to accomplish such a feat.

It is evident how integral Lookman is to Atalanta and the Bergamo community. Shortly after the final, a fan, overwhelmed with emotion, gifted him a wooden plaque inscribed with the final’s details, including the clubs’ crests and the times of Lookman’s three goals. He carries it with him, along with his jersey and boots from that match.

His journey from the streets of south London — where he was raised in Peckham — to becoming one of Europe’s top attacking talents has been extraordinary. “The fire still burns as passionately as it did when I was seven or eight years old,” he remarked in August. The interesting question remains: where will that drive lead him next?

Jack Pitt-Brooke

Tell me about how he plays…

Lookman is a forward with a dual threat. He can just as easily create opportunities for teammates as he can find the back of the net himself while in an Atalanta jersey.

This season, he hit double digits in combined goals and assists before the end of November and appears primed to surpass his previous Serie A total of 19 involvement (13 goals and six assists) from the 2022-23 season.

Lookman’s knack for arriving in the box for first-time finishes is a skill he has honed in Italy, evidenced by recent goals against Parma in the league…

… as well as against Stuttgart in the Champions League.

“Getting into the box is crucial as an attacking player, but I’ve always aimed to arrive in those spaces, anticipating the action before it unfolds. It’s about being aware of space to receive and finish,” Lookman told eScored last season.

This ability is highly sought after across Europe.

Few positions are tougher to fill consistently than left-back. Reliable defenders are always in high demand, especially given the limited pool of left-footed players. A player who can successfully contain opponents like Bukayo Saka one week and contribute assists against Liverpool while marking Mohamed Salah the next will definitely draw interest.

Antonee Robinson is making headlines after several impressive performances but has long shown potential for high-level play. The 27-year-old has made significant strides since joining Fulham in 2020 and is now one of Marco Silva’s most trusted players, as well as an irreplaceable figure for the United States. By the finale of the 2023-24 season, many observers were placing him among the best left-backs in the league.

If his proven track record in the Premier League is not enough to attract attention, his time at Everton’s academy ensures he qualifies as a homegrown talent. Five years after nearly signing with Milan, consistent play for club and country could finally earn Robinson a chance at a European powerhouse.

Jeff Rueter

What else do I need to know about him?

Five years ago, few followers of the U.S. men’s national team would have predicted Robinson’s rise. Early in Gregg Berhalter’s tenure as USMNT coach, a 21-year-old Robinson endured a rough outing in a 1-0 friendly loss to Jamaica, resulting in his exclusion from the 2019 Gold Cup squad.

He rebounded with a breakout season at Wigan Athletic, establishing himself as one of the best players in the Championship, even as Wigan faced relegation. On January deadline day, Milan made a reported $13 million (£10 million at the time) offer that Wigan accepted, but a medical revealed a heart rhythm irregularity that fell through the deal. Fortunately, Robinson (who doesn’t consume much coffee) attributed it to caffeine shots before matches.

Robinson signed with Fulham in August 2020. By the time of the 2022 World Cup qualifying rounds concluded, the advantages of a season in the Premier League and another one in the Championship were becoming evident. Now, he stands as one of only two Americans who have clearly improved since the tournament in Qatar, alongside frequent left flank partner Christian Pulisic.

Robinson is an engaging personality, quick to smile during good conversations, and thoughtful with his responses in a post-match mixed zone. Since childhood, he has embraced the nickname “Jedi,” inspired by his fondness for Star Wars — he matured as the storyline of young Anakin Skywalker unfolded on-screen.

“It’s become so prominent that I now introduce myself as Jedi to simplify things,” Robinson remarked on Wigan’s site. “It has quite the power to it.”

Jeff Rueter

Tell me about how he plays…

He brings significant force to his game, especially when his opponent has the ball. In the Premier League, 28 full-backs and wing-backs have logged at least 810 minutes of play this season, with Robinson leading all players at 1,440 minutes. Among these 28 players, he ranks seventh for ‘true’ tackles per 1,000 opponent touches (7.6), with a tackle win rate of 64.1 percent that demonstrates his eagerness and efficiency in challenging dribblers. True tackles include total tackles, lost challenges, and fouls committed while attempting a tackle.

His 4.5 interceptions and blocked passes per 1,000 opponent touches ranks fourth, while his 60.9 aerial duel win rate is the second-best among the group, indicating he could potentially shift to a wide centre-back position.

As Liverpool discovered this month, Robinson is also potent when surging down the flank. He averages more open-play crosses per 100 touches (5.77) than all but Aston Villa’s Lucas Digne. His 1.5 open-play chances created per 100 touches ranks him seventh in this category. These stats culminate in 0.52 open-play assists per 100 touches—tops among the 28 qualifiers, ahead of Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Robinson occupies esteemed company in the underlying statistics. Only a select few clubs enter January with a left-back they trust implicitly. The rest of the league, especially the top teams, would do well to keep an eye on Robinson’s availability before someone else swoops in.

Liam Delap is drawing interest from larger clubs over a prospective move next summer.

The 21-year-old transferred to Ipswich Town from Manchester City in July and has attracted attention from Premier League teams for quite some time. His reputation received a boost after scoring six goals in his initial 11 league matches this season.

Delap counts Chelsea and Manchester United among his admirers. There’s a general belief that if he maintains or exceeds his current performance levels throughout this season, he will move to one of the Premier League’s top clubs.

City typically include matching rights or buy-back clauses in their player sales, meaning they may have input on his next destination.

While Ipswich will strive to keep Delap, they may face challenges doing so, even if they avoid relegation. Retaining their Premier League status would at least enhance their bargaining position.

David Ornstein

What else do I need to know about him?

Delap comes from a football-centric family. His father, Rory, played for the Republic of Ireland and became a cult hero for his long throw-ins at Stoke City (he once quipped he realized the attention had gone too far when asked to throw a Christmas pudding over a double-decker bus), while his younger brother, Finn, is with League One club Burton Albion.

Both siblings began in the youth setups at Rory Delap’s former club, Derby County, before Liam moved to Manchester City in 2019. He played alongside notable talents like Cole Palmer, Romeo Lavia, and Oscar Bobb in Enzo Maresca’s youth squad, making a total of six first-team appearances under Pep Guardiola.

Choosing Ipswich over Southampton last summer, Delap has been tasked with leading their attack in their first season back in the Premier League.

Kieran McKenna has praised Delap’s development in off-the-ball play and tactical understanding during the last six months, with captain Sam Morsy labeling him an “old-fashioned battering ram.” Although his movement within the penalty area has been identified as an area for improvement, McKenna believes that if he continues to progress, Delap could become a “really, really rare player.”

Ali Rampling

Tell me about how he plays

Delap’s ascent comes during a resurgence of traditional centre-forwards, whose physicality and hold-up play offer a counter against high presses. He possesses those attributes while complementing them with quality shooting, dribbling, and active involvement in buildup play.

As depicted in the chart below, Delap plays a vital role in Ipswich’s attacking sequences. His buildup involvement, while lower than some teammates, remains substantial as he also stands out as one of their top creators.

Delap’s physical attributes, paired with his 6ft 1in (186cm) frame, have eased his adaptation to the Premier League. However, Ipswich has also reaped the benefits from his technical expertise and explosiveness.

Florian Wirtz shines as a gem of German football and played a pivotal role in Bayer Leverkusen’s unbeaten domestic double last season, earning him the Bundesliga’s Player of the Year accolade. Together with Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala, he has emerged as a key figure for Julian Nagelsmann’s national team, crucial to Germany’s aspirations in the 2026 World Cup.

His contract runs through 2027, so Leverkusen is under no obligation to sell him. However, given his strong rapport with in-demand manager Xabi Alonso, a time may come when Wirtz, who joined from Koln in 2020, seeks pastures new.

With an asking price tagged at €150 million (£125 million; $159 million), Wirtz clearly sits high in valuation, signifying how much he is prized. Club CEO Fernando Carro believes he might remain at Leverkusen beyond this season.

Seb Stafford-Bloor

What else do I need to know about him?

A certain enigmatic quietness defines him. His media attentiveness in Germany is expected, but he is also very well-liked within the Leverkusen dressing room and has a penchant for fashion, looking like someone fresh from a Stone Roses concert.

Wirtz has been a star from a young age. In his early teens, stories circulated about a diminutive lad at Koln destined to be one of the country’s premier talents. That hype has borne fruit. Yet his pathway hasn’t been without controversy, stemming from breaches of unspoken agreements.

During his time in Koln’s youth setup, several clubs, including Leverkusen, Borussia Monchengladbach, and Fortuna Dusseldorf, agreed to refrain from poaching each other’s youth talents for the greater good.

After turning 17, Wirtz’s contract at Koln expired. His family wanted him to prioritize his education and remain nearby, leading him to join Leverkusen for €300,000. His new club perceived him as a senior player rather than a youth signing. Koln contested this, asserting Leverkusen violated their agreement.

Max Eberl, the sporting director at Gladbach (and now Bayern’s board member for sports), criticized Leverkusen’s actions while Carro staunchly defended his club.

While this remains a bygone issue, Wirtz is still on Bayern’s radar, raising the stakes for precarious negotiations.

Will he move to Bayern? Unlikely. The priority for Bayern is securing Musiala’s contract extension. Given his strong relationship with Alonso and his outstanding form under the coach, it’s reasonable to bet they may opt to progress together.

Seb Stafford-Bloor

Tell me about how he plays…

On the pitch, Wirtz’s control, dribbling, and creativity make him one of the most electrifying talents in the game. He has the ability to glide past defenders and set up teammates with one-twos and precise passes while his positioning often puts him in advantageous scoring situations.

Across his brief senior career, he has played various roles across the front line and as a No. 10. This flexibility has enabled Nagelsmann to employ him and Musiala side by side successfully at Euro 2024.

Wirtz has also improved defensively under Alonso, demonstrating a willingness to contribute significantly to Leverkusen’s pressing game. He has raised his playing standard behind the striker, but arguably, he has yet to reach his peak — and that prospect is exhilarating.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s situation is among the most prominent in the market, owing to his talent and contract status.

It’s uncommon for someone so young, skilled, and closely tied to a prestigious club like Liverpool to stand near the end of their contract terms.

The England international has remained loyal to Liverpool, where efforts are ongoing to retain him, yet discussions haven’t yielded results thus far.

This uncertainty has attracted interest from elsewhere, with Real Madrid’s admiration well documented. Key decisions will need to be made soon, particularly since, as of January 1, Alexander-Arnold is eligible to sign a pre-contract with overseas clubs.

Liverpool are eager to keep such a core player but will have to find a package that meets both his expectations and their financial framework.

At the same time, suitors will look to persuade him to move. Thus, this remains an active situation needing resolution in 2025 or sooner. Currently, the outcome remains unclear.

David Ornstein

What else do I need to know about him?

The Liverpool-born England international, who would sneak peeks at his childhood idol Steven Gerrard training at Melwood, holds deep affection for his home city and the After Academy initiative he began last year to create opportunities for former academy youths who didn’t make the cut.

He is one who made the grade and has reached remarkable heights. Before his 22nd birthday, he had already won the Champions League, Club World Cup, and the Premier League with his boyhood club. However, since the league title in 2020, silverware has mostly been limited to domestic cups.

Recently, Alexander-Arnold has expressed ambitions for the Ballon d’Or. When asked what factors would influence his choice to remain or pursue a new challenge in 2025, he mentioned, “The most critical element is always trophies. I am highly motivated by winning and achieving elite status. That’s likely the main factor.”

In addressing criticisms concerning the defensive side of his game, he requested Liverpool’s new head coach Arne Slot to offer him candid feedback. The two often convene for one-on-one evaluations at Kirkby, discussing his strengths and areas for improvement.

There’s no question regarding Alexander-Arnold’s commitment to advancing his skill set, and soon we will learn if these traits lead to continued achievement at Anfield or the pursuit of new opportunities.

James Pearce

Tell me about how he plays…

The 2024-25 season presents a different scenario for Alexander-Arnold than previous seasons under Jurgen Klopp. Even before Klopp began using him in a midfield role, Alexander-Arnold would often advance, relying on the right-sided central midfielder to cover the space he vacated.

This year, however, Slot has recalibrated Alexander-Arnold’s role (see below). Slot is deploying him as a right-back more involved in the build-up process. Consequently, Alexander-Arnold has been making fewer crossfield passes, with a higher proportion of his touches occurring in the middle and defensive thirds as opposed to the attacking third.

Slot’s readiness to adapt his side’s formation depending upon the match situation and opponents has required Alexander-Arnold to enhance his defensive game. Tackling more often than in previous seasons should significantly aid his growth as a defensive player, providing essential value whatever his future holds in 2025.

Benjamin Sesko was the pivotal figure in the striker market last summer. Four Premier League teams – Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Newcastle United – expressed interest, but he ultimately chose to stay at RB Leipzig for another season, recognizing that he required consistency before committing to one of Europe’s elite clubs. Those close to Sesko communicated that he was aware of the heightened expectations that would accompany the Premier League.

He recently extended his contract until 2029, with a gentleman’s agreement with Leipzig indicating they would not inhibit his move should a competitive offer arise. His new contract boasts improved financial terms but remains below what he could expect in the Premier League. With only Manchester United addressing their striker needs since last summer, the remaining interested clubs are keeping an eye on the situation.

Jacob Whitehead

What else do I need to know about him?

Sesko’s father, Ales, was a goalkeeper at a local Slovenian club, which led to the practice of placing young Benjamin in the same position during junior training. Very early on, he expressed dissatisfaction with the role, going on to score 50 goals in a single season as a forward.

His recent seasons have been challenging, as he has developed a reputation for being erratic—oscillating between scoring bursts and extended goal droughts. The need for consistency in the less pressurized Bundesliga is a big reason why he chose to remain in Leipzig.

The other major sport in Slovenia is basketball, and Sesko exchanges messages with compatriot Luka Doncic, the Dallas Mavericks superstar. He made the choice to pursue football at age 10, and has been fine-tuning his ability to score scrappy goals, not just stunning strikes, and coaches are aiding him in seizing more chances inside the box.

After playing through injury at Euro 2024, his determination to succeed is palpable—now, he just needs time.

Jacob Whitehead

Tell me about how he plays…

There’s far more to Sesko’s game than just finding the net. He actively seeks the ball and is not afraid to take risks, albeit with his passing occasionally going astray.

Despite standing at 6ft 5in (195cm), he possesses excellent close-control skills and the ability to outmaneuver defenders at speed. Combined with his adeptness in aerial challenges, he presents a formidable test for centre-backs.

However, his shooting is perhaps his most noteworthy attribute, as he can score with both his right and left foot, as well as his head (illustrated by last season’s shot map below), along with stellar positioning and movement off the ball.

He has thrived when partnered with a pacey forward, such as Lois Openda at Leipzig or Junior Adamu at Red Bull Salzburg. Any club interested in him would enhance their front line with his presence.

Many well-informed sources believe that Martin Zubimendi is reconciling the notion of leaving Real Sociedad, with expectations leaning towards a summer exit.

Some close to the situation remain skeptical, suggesting he may ultimately decide to stay, as has happened in the past.

However, recent discussions suggest this time is different, and with time for both him and Real Sociedad to prepare his departure, rather than rushing, he is expected to move on.

Liverpool’s unsuccessful pursuit of Zubimendi last window demonstrated the club’s interest. Arsenal and various other long-term admirers have also been enlisted. There are indications Manchester City might fancy him in January to fill the gaps left by Rodri, but if he does move, that is more likely to occur at the end of the season.

David Ornstein

What else do I need to know about him?

When Liverpool gave up on pursuit in August, it was indicated that the player opted to remain in San Sebastian due to local sentiments. For any player raised in the region, the Basque Country isn’t an easy place to leave.

For instance, during the 2012 episode when Fernando Llorente sought to leave Athletic Club for Juventus, he spent most of his final season in Bilbao on the bench.

Identity holds considerable weight in this region, where Athletic adheres to their Basque-only recruitment policy, and Zubimendi’s Real Sociedad typically seeks homegrown talent instead of purchasing from the transfer market.

However, La Real’s approach to selling diverges from their rivals. They are recognized for their flexibility, provided a player demonstrates a strong desire to leave.

President Jokin Aperribay enabled Robin Le Normand’s transfer to Atletico Madrid for €34.5 million (£28.8 million; $36.5 million), which is approximately half of his release clause. Aperribay believes more players will wish to join Real Sociedad if they recognize the club can be a stepping stone.

Typically, it hinges on how far the player is prepared to push. Zubimendi was keen on joining Liverpool, but he was conflicted as it would entail leaving La Real in a precarious position, especially with Mikel Merino also departing for Arsenal that summer.

Simon Hughes

Tell me about how he plays…

Zubimendi showcases press resistance and the well-regarded on-ball qualities typical of Spanish ‘registas’ (deep-lying playmakers). Viewed as Rodri’s successor, who is just three years older, Zubimendi ranks among La Liga’s premier midfielders.

He can retreat to receive the ball between the center-backs or adopt the ball on the turn. The quintessential midfield conductor, Zubimendi’s passes are precise and rarely misfire, often facilitating connections with teammates positioned forward, as illustrated by his passing chart below.

He has worked on perceived limitations regarding his capacity to progress the ball into the final third, assisting Real Sociedad in mitigating the departure of Merino.

Mohamed Salah’s future remains clouded, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

“I haven’t received any offers yet to stay at the club. I’m probably more out than in,” he remarked to reporters post-match after his decisive performance in Liverpool’s 3-2 win versus Southampton in November.

According to reports from eScored, Salah would entertain a fresh one-year contract but is increasingly frustrated with the club’s handling of negotiations.

His preferred option is to remain at Anfield, but he desires a new deal that reflects his standing as one of the world’s elite players.

Links to a move to the Saudi Pro League persist — Liverpool had previously rejected a £150 million ($190 million at current rates) offer from Al Ittihad in 2023 — yet Salah intends to play at the highest level in Europe.

His current contract exceeds £350,000 per week, plus bonuses. Liverpool aims to retain him but insist that any extension must fit the financial parameters due to his age.

James Pearce and Simon Hughes

What else do I need to know about him?

With his 33rd birthday approaching in June, Salah should be slowing down — but he remains Liverpool’s most potent attacking threat.

His durability is as remarkable as his goal-scoring ability, a product of his unwavering professionalism.

Upon returning to Kirkby for pre-season training in July, he led the fitness tests, outperforming players 15 years younger than himself. “Phenomenal,” was how Liverpool’s first-team fitness coach, Conall Murtagh, summed it up.

As he nears the milestone of scoring 20 goals for the eighth consecutive season at Anfield, he has mastered the art of maintaining his physical and mental health.

Salah’s Cheshire home features not only a gym and pool but also cryotherapy and hyperbaric chambers. Cryotherapy aids recovery through exposure to extreme cold, while hyperbaric therapy promotes healing of damaged muscle tissue by inhaling pure oxygen in a pressurized environment.

He dedicates time daily to yoga and practices meditation, which aids in maintaining his composure; he recently joked that his young daughters think he’s “crazy” when they catch him sitting quietly alone at home.

Academically, he adheres to a diet of vegetables, fish, chicken, and salad, avoiding bread, sugar, and dairy. The results of this strict regimen are evident in his renowned physique.

Salah also enjoys chess and appreciates the strategy involved, as it keeps both his mind and body ready for peak performance.

James Pearce

Tell me about how he plays

While Salah’s relentless goal-scoring prowess is well-known, his enhancement in creative contributions over recent seasons should not be overlooked.

His assist rate has soared this season, with his expected assists — a metric measuring the expected goals value of assisted shots — showing last season’s rate of 0.42 per 90 minutes nearly doubled in comparison to five of his previous six campaigns at Liverpool.

By November’s end, his assist rate was at its highest since joining Merseyside.

Whatever the fate that awaits Salah, his skills have enhanced even further in recent times. The statistics simply affirm what is clearly visible on the pitch.

Last summer, significant interest arose from the Premier League for Nico Williams, but he set his heart on joining Barcelona. After waiting for that opportunity, he ultimately decided to stay at Athletic Club when it didn’t materialize.

Presently, it appears that Barcelona — with Raphinha and Lamine Yamal thriving — are unlikely to be in the running for him, which heightens the chances of a shift to the Premier League, a transition he is now more receptive to than before. There exists a release clause of around €55 million (£46 million), and Athletic will only consider selling if that is triggered, rendering his contract’s end in 2027 inconsequential.

Although he commands a substantial wage, the clause is relatively low for a player of his caliber, making a 2025 move highly probable — the primary question being whether it will occur in January or at the season’s conclusion.

While he has expressed a preference against a winter transfer, the unexpected can always arise. Regardless, clubs like Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Tottenham Hotspur have long-held admiration for him.

David Ornstein

What else do I need to know about him?

After triumphing in the Copa del Rey in April and Euro 2024 in July, Williams collected another accolade in October when his film ‘Los Williams’ clinched the Public Prize at the Basque Documentary Film Awards.

Narrated firsthand by Nico along with his older brother and Athletic teammate Inaki, it weaves themes of identity, racism, ambition, and success.

The documentary provides an account of how their parents, Maria and Felix, traversed the Sahara desert to reach the Spanish enclave of Melilla while Maria was pregnant with Inaki (as the elder sibling recounted to eScored in 2022). The narrative also observes the brothers reflecting upon navigating their identities as black Basques in Pamplona and Bilbao, as well as representing Spain (Nico) and Ghana (Inaki) at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Featuring footage of the siblings visiting their relatives in Ghana, the film premiered at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in September.

Williams’ affection for Bilbao has led him to express a desire to remain another year at Athletic, especially as San Mames stadium prepares to host the Europa League final in May. He aspires to secure the club’s inaugural European trophy at home.

Dermot Corrigan

Tell me about how he plays…

Williams exhibits the same frenetic pace and dazzling footwork that lit up the Euros, along with a devastating ability to cut inside and shoot.

Despite a minor dip in decisive contributions early in the season, he continues to disrupt defenses along the left flank through his bold dribbling and one-on-one challenges.

His fearlessness makes him an invaluable option, consistently available for the pass down the wing and often drawing multiple defenders to account for his threatening play.

Williams may not be the only young, daring dribbler in Europe, but his dual-sided playing ability, combined with his impressive ability to slice through defenses with relentless running and skill, keeps the continent’s elite clubs on high alert.

Alphonso Davies’ contract with Bayern Munich is set to expire in the summer of 2025, making him one of the market’s most sought-after players.

eScored reported in February that Real Madrid and the player’s representatives had reached an agreement on terms which could facilitate a transfer either in 2024 or as a free agent a year later, likely with a larger signing bonus included.

Real’s pursuit has since cooled; they now prefer to attain Davies on a free transfer in 2025. This has brought him closer to an extension with Bayern: an agreement in principle emerged in June, yet the board opted to delay due to concerns regarding Davies’ performances.

While Bayern are not ruling out the prospect of Davies remaining past 2025 and are looking to convene with the player’s representatives, Premier League clubs are also showing interest in him.

Real have resumed their pursuit after securing the Champions League and have been in touch since September but despite reports in Spain, no definite agreement has been formed yet.

Mario Cortegana Santos

What else do I need to know about him?

Davies’ backstory is well-known: born in a Ghanaian refugee camp after his Liberian parents fled during a civil war, he moved to Canada at the age of five and began playing football through a government initiative for those unable to afford equipment and fees. Since then, he has rapidly risen through the Vancouver Whitecaps academy to MLS and subsequently to Bayern.

Today, he is a social media sensation, boasting millions of followers and possessing a penchant for staying in front of the camera alongside a sharp, self-deprecating sense of humor.

“Goofy” is how fellow Canada teammate Theo Bair describes Davies. A big sneaker enthusiast, he admitted in an interview with eScored to bringing five pairs to a recent Canada training camp—”Normally it’s more,” he added.

This light-hearted nature extends to his love for napping; Bair recalls how in their time with the Whitecaps, Davies would often visit his downtown apartment and fall asleep during their meetings, playing FIFA, and chatting, often lasting for two hours. It seems this habit persists as, during an interview with eScored, Davies’ phone alarm went off midday: “I was planning on going for a nap,” he mentioned. Despite being a top-earning player, his demeanor belies the stakes of his profession.

Josh Kloke

In a time where full-backs are tucking inside and centre-backs are roaming wide, Davies remains a classic left-back, known for his pace and energy.

His dual abilities shine both on and off the ball. He can provide width down the left, overlap to create chances, and apply defensive pressure with remarkable recovery speed.

Davies can carry the ball forward at breakneck speed, turning defense into attack with remarkable fluidity. This is a player whose future potential remains bright.

Kevin De Bruyne’s contract at Manchester City will lapse in the summer, presenting three primary options currently: extend with City for a year, move to Saudi Arabia, or join Major League Soccer.

Should he remain, it would likely mean a 12-month extension before eventually transitioning to another market. This has always loomed as a potential pathway, irrespective of Pep Guardiola’s renewed contract.

De Bruyne believes he can keep operating at a high level and comprehends that once he leaves the Premier League, it may be a permanent departure.

The door at City remains ajar; he would only need to communicate his wishes. Open discussions have taken place out of mutual respect, and a deal is on the table should he desire it.

Should he choose to head to Saudi Arabia, it would almost certainly be a club backed by PIF; frontrunners appear to be Al Nassr in Riyadh or Al Ahli in Jeddah. The clubs, alongside the Saudi Pro League, have expressed interest, though discussions aren’t at an advanced stage. Both sides acknowledge the opportunity, should he opt for that direction.

Conversations have also occurred regarding U.S. teams, primarily through the MLS, providing another viable option.

Most clubs would leap at the chance to land De Bruyne, with many prepared to reconfigure designated player slots to accommodate him, should the need arise.

“I felt I could make a difference at this level, I felt I could help this team, and as long as I feel that, it’s a good sign that I can still perform at the highest level,” De Bruyne addressed during a press conference in November.

His future was a topic of discussion, but it’s challenging to plan ahead without establishing the present.

“I can assist the team but you can only accomplish so much from the sidelines,” he remarked in another instance; his past 18 months have indeed presented challenges.

Having played through discomfort at the close of 2022-23, he suffered a hamstring tear in the Champions League final, subsequently experiencing another setback after returning for the new season, necessitating surgery that left a noticeable scar.

He managed to rejoin the squad in January to aid City in clinching another title, yet he required ten weeks off this season, with Guardiola likening him to a vehicle: “When it gets serviced, it doesn’t run the same.”

De Bruyne articulates, “I was doing some training, but there’s only so much I could contribute, and that wasn’t a pleasant feeling. Each time I would shoot, pain would ensue.”

A once-in-a-generation talent in the Premier League and a genuine City legend, but issues like these will need resolution if he intends to prolong his time at the Etihad.

There is little left to scrutinize regarding De Bruyne’s creative genius that hasn’t been addressed, although witnessing it in fragments over the past two seasons—amid injuries and form fluctuations—has put into context the value of his penetration ability.

A brief 16-minute cameo against Tottenham in November offered glimpses of De Bruyne at his finest, threading a ball through for Erling Haaland right after entering the match, then swinging in a first-time cross that a retreating defender scruffed over the crossbar.

Regardless of fitness apprehensions, no player dissects the defensive block as effectively as De Bruyne.

Jamal Musiala is anticipated to make a decision regarding his future during the winter break, as Bayern Munich is eager to secure him with a lucrative long-term contract that will reaffirm his status as the club’s most valuable asset and one of the globe’s most gifted players.

With 18 months left on his deal, Bayern is aware of the ticking clock and is determined to retain him. Although elite clubs across Europe are monitoring his contract situation, Bayern is not contemplating a sale.

Discussions have begun between club and player about a new deal, centering on Bayern’s vision for him to be both the heart of the team on the pitch and the face of the club off it. In Bayern’s view, Musiala can attain team accomplishment while also earning individual acclaim at the club.

Musiala is content in Munich, enjoys playing for Bayern, and has a good rapport with everyone at the club. He intends to set aside thoughts of his future until the end of December, focusing instead on helping the team reclaim the Bundesliga title.

To grasp Bayern’s stance, it’s essential to appreciate what Musiala symbolizes for the club.

He might not be a homegrown player in the way Aleksandar Pavlovic is — having been born in Munich and part of the academy from a young age — but his popularity is akin to that level. Musiala came to the club at 16. Born in Stuttgart and raised mainly in England, he departed Chelsea at age 16 and contributed to Bayern’s reserve team, Bayern Munich II, which won the German third tier during the 2019-20 season.

Others in that squad, such as Alphonso Davies, Angelo Stiller, Josip Stanisic, Chris Richards, and Malik Tillman, have since moved into professional play.

Bayern feels a dip in their traditional academy ties over recent years, leading to a decrease in their influence within the dressing room. The economics of today’s football indicate that without bringing Musiala in as a youth player, Bayern would find it hard to attract someone of his caliber. This combination is particularly powerful.

The familiar sight of Musiala gliding past defenders with nimble touches has garnered excitement and, more importantly for Bayern, goals.

When he’s not dazzling opponents with intricate footwork, Musiala has a keen awareness of player positioning for both teammate and opponent. This informs his deliberate decision-making, which remains focused even in high-paced scenarios.

Initially, he demonstrated more capacity to connect with wide forwards and full-backs in dangerous areas. However, following Harry Kane’s arrival, he has forged a compelling partnership with the dropping center-forward, adding another dimension to his already rich skill set.

Musiala, akin to his compatriot Florian Wirtz, is capable of operating within a double pivot, as a No. 10, or in wide spaces.

Both Bayern and Germany have also harnessed his off-the-ball contributions. He truly is the real deal.

Paris Saint-Germain has all options available regarding Xavi Simons. No conclusions have been reached regarding his future, and many circumstances could evolve before summer.

Having been loaned to RB Leipzig in the last window, given that coach Luis Enrique could not guarantee starting opportunities, the player’s situation could shift depending on coaching perspectives.

PSG particularly requires quality for the Champions League adventure, thus from an offensive standpoint, he could fill that role. Simons is a young talent who aligns with PSG’s fresh philosophy.

By the end of the current season, he’ll have two years remaining on his contract. There has been no indication of him seeking a renewal, making this a critical juncture for PSG to optimize any potential return from a sale. Should it take place, he is almost assuredly to generate significant financial returns.

Certain close to the events suggest this outcome is plausible, with speculation pointing towards a move to the Premier League or La Liga.

Interest also burgeons from Germany, as Leipzig is keen to cement the loan into a full-time arrangement. Their budget may, however, limit this, as they attempt to lure him with their narrative and project. Bayern Munich previously demonstrated willingness to invest €100 million in him, and Borussia Dortmund similarly admires his talents.

Arsenal, Barcelona, Bayern, Liverpool, and Real Madrid are viewed as the most likely destinations, while Manchester United expressed interest in the earlier transfer window.

Ultimately, however, it hinges on both the player and Luis Enrique. Should the coach wish to retain him and slightly adjust the team’s approach — or should Simons come back and accept not being a guaranteed starter — he may very well remain.

PSG regards Simons as a golden opportunity; they can either retain an elite talent or trade him for an enormous profit. Barring unforeseen complications, his projected transfer fee should settle around €80 million minimum.

His recovery after undergoing any injuries in the next six to eight months will also be crucial. Following surgery for an ankle issue suffered in a match versus Liverpool, he should be back in action by January.

During Euro 2024, Simons spent downtime playing Uno and Fortnite, with Japanese anime forming a part of his relaxation routine. One of his favorites, Naruto, encapsulates a young man’s quest to realize his dreams.

When he netted his initial senior Netherlands goal in a friendly against Iceland in June, he celebrated by closing his eyes in a Naruto-inspired ‘sage’ pose, encapsulating the pressure of expectations he’s faced throughout his career. Despite his talents being recognized from a young age, he has consistently fought to eclipse more star-studded teammates. During his time at La Masia, Gavi was one year younger, and at PSG, he’s had to contend with Kylian Mbappe.

Choosing to leave La Masia for PSG as a teenager was a big risk, as he acknowledged that spot on the first team would need to be earned. Where to now? His attitude is defined by a quote from Naruto he often reflects upon on social media: “We won’t know unless we try.”

Simons can operate effectively as a No. 10, narrow forward, or traditional winger, able to receive the ball in tight areas and weave past opponents, generating chances for both himself and teammates.

His creativity and technical wizardry allow him to navigate through the center or locate runners off the ball.

Another hallmark of Simons’ game is his spatial awareness, which turns him into a threat poised to exploit gaps between opposing defensive lines. He instinctively positions himself as a progressive passing option who inflicts considerable damage once receiving the ball.

Jeremie Frimpong is under contract until June 2028, and Bayer Leverkusen has no intentions of selling him in January; they would only change course for a proposal that is too lucrative to decline.

Leverkusen prefers to engage in business during the summer solely. They already have a backup lined up — my colleague Seb Stafford-Bloor has indicated that Arthur will step up should Frimpong depart.

Frimpong’s contract includes a release clause for less than €40 million, thus whether through that mechanism or otherwise, a fee of that nature would be required to secure his services.

However, the decision doesn’t solely rest with Leverkusen; the player’s preference is also crucial in determining the final outcomes.

There is pronounced interest from Premier League clubs and various others as well. Placement to certain potential destinations may depend on openings arising subject to players departing those clubs.

Frimpong’s vibrant personality became evident throughout Leverkusen’s double-winning season. His live television appearances highlighted how he made a career in football appear enjoyable.

There is no figure more popular in the Leverkusen dressing room, but behind that exuberance and fun facade lies an intense desire for self-betterment. If he gets the chance, Frimpong will share extensively about aspects of his game that need evolution. His relationship with Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman took time to thaw, but his work ethic ultimately earned him a place in the squad.

He values family deeply. After Leverkusen completed their unbeaten league season, he proudly led his brothers and friends through the players’ tunnel. When the cameras inundated the celebrations, he graciously took his mother by the arm, bringing her into the limelight, proudly showcasing her to the world.
