Tottenham Set to Address Centre-Back Concerns with Elite European Defender: Report
Tottenham have faced significant challenges at centre-back during Ange Postecoglou’s tenure, but this may soon change with the acquisition of a high-caliber European player.
Although Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have become Postecoglou’s go-to centre-back pairing at Tottenham, injuries and suspensions—frequently affecting both players simultaneously—have necessitated makeshift defensive lineups.
This situation appears poised to improve, as Tottenham seeks to recruit established talent capable of potentially displacing one of the current defenders from the starting XI.
Tottenham interested in PSG defender Milan Skriniar
As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Tottenham is closely monitoring Milan Skriniar’s status at PSG, as the Slovakian defender has fallen out of favor under Luis Enrique.
Having played only four of PSG’s 14 Ligue 1 matches this season, Skriniar seems to be deemed unnecessary in Paris. He was even omitted from the matchday squad against Lyon last weekend, with younger players Willian Pacho and Lucas Beraldo starting instead, leaving Marquinhos on the bench.
The report indicates that January is a pivotal moment in the 29-year-old’s career, with Tottenham mentioned as a likely destination. Atletico Madrid has also been mentioned, along with a potential return to Italy.
Skriniar joined the French club on a free transfer in the summer of 2023 and initially appeared to settle in well at Parc des Princes. However, Luis Enrique’s perspective on the reliable centre-back has shifted, leading Skriniar to explore other options for consistent playtime.
Despite having three-and-a-half years left on his PSG contract, Skriniar is estimated to be worth only €15m according to Transfermarkt, suggesting that Spurs might find a bargain in the upcoming January transfer window. While PSG would probably ask for more than that figure, they would still net a profit, having acquired him for free.
According to FourFourTwo, the connection between Skriniar and Tottenham seems somewhat tenuous, indicating that both parties could indeed benefit from a union without providing substantial proof. However, if the conditions are right, bringing in the former Inter captain could significantly enhance Tottenham’s defensive choices.
