Newcastle eye surprising January bid for Tottenham misfit, according to reports

Newcastle United are reportedly eyeing a star from Tottenham Hotspur in what might turn out to be the surprise transfer of the January window.

Although the Magpies have shown flashes of brilliance this season, they have been notably inconsistent, struggling to establish a stable momentum in the Premier League. With five wins, five draws, and five losses, manager Eddie Howe finds his side sitting in 12th place, hindered by injuries affecting their performance.

Financial constraints due to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) mean Newcastle may have limited funds for January, yet a surprising deal could still be on the horizon.

Newcastle is reportedly targeting several players as they look to push for a spot in European competitions during the latter half of the season.

A failed attempt to sign Marc Guehi underscored the necessity for defensive depth in light of Sven Botman’s absence, while their attacking options have appeared thin due to Callum Wilson’s recent injury and Miguel Almiron’s poor performance.

Ben Jacobs recently provided insights regarding Newcastle’s interest in signing Richarlison, especially following the Brazilian’s lackluster tenure at Tottenham.

During a discussion on the NUFC Matters YouTube channel, Jacobs noted that Richarlison is considering a departure from Spurs in 2025, especially with a spot in Brazil’s World Cup squad for 2026 at stake. He believes the 27-year-old could be a significant target for the Toon.

“There is some substance to Richarlison and Newcastle, but price is the big issue because Spurs have been adamant throughout all of 2024 that if they’re to entertain an offer, it’s £60million or more,” Jacobs stated.

“Newcastle would not be looking anywhere near that number, given the player’s injury record and his form. Therefore, if this is to develop and Richarlison is open to going to another Premier League club, it would have to be from Newcastle’s point of view around the £40-45m mark.”

In the opinion of eScored, a loan could represent the best solution for both parties. Richarlison is eager for playing time, while Newcastle require additional offensive options, with only Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon being reliable starters for Howe this season.

Richarlison’s value is estimated at €35m, according to Transfermarkt. This weekend, Newcastle will face Leicester City when Premier League action resumes.

Club expert Matt Ketchell finds it hard to envision Richarlison signing with Newcastle

Richarlison Brazil Everton

I find it exceptionally challenging to envision Eddie Howe making a move for Richarlison in either of the next two transfer windows for several reasons.

If Alexander Isak remains at the club through the winter window, Richarlison’s playing time would likely be limited to the occasions when the Swedish striker can’t play or requires a break. This undermines the rationale behind Richarlison’s reported desire for a transfer.

At £30-£40m, it seems that Newcastle may lack the capacity to allocate such funds to a striker, especially when defensive reinforcements are clearly needed. A loan arrangement would increase the wage burden, given Richarlison’s reported earnings of approximately £175,000 per week.

Additionally, Richarlison’s attitude has always raised concerns, and with Eddie Howe prioritizing collective effort and team spirit, it seems unlikely that this is the type of player he would target. Even with two senior Brazilians, Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes, available to potentially mentor him, this scenario feels like a gamble.
