Tottenham Hotspur Engaged in Negotiations for Unexpected Micky van de Ven Replacement: Report
Tottenham Hotspur have initiated discussions with a South American talent to succeed Micky van de Ven.
Van de Ven, who joined from Wolfsburg as one of Ange Postecoglou’s initial signings, has earned positive feedback from the supporters. The Dutch defender is the quickest player in the Premier League based on statistics, with his recovery speed significantly aiding Tottenham’s ability to maintain a high defensive line.
However, with the Lilywhites facing defensive challenges this season, Postecoglou is actively seeking a replacement for Van de Ven, as his injury problems have been a major concern for the Australian coach.
Micky van de Ven’s Tottenham Hotspur career has been marred by injury – and now the club are set to respond
Prior to Van de Ven’s unfortunate injury against Chelsea at home last November, Tottenham had gone 11 matches unbeaten. The north London side fell into a slump after that game, ultimately finishing outside the top four despite leading the league at one stage.
Van de Ven has faced considerable challenges, missing 15 matches due to hamstring injuries since the previous season began. Consequently, Postecoglou’s patience may be wearing thin, as he can no longer depend on the defender.
As reported by the Paraguayan source D10, Spurs have “begun negotiations” for South American defender Omar Alderete, who can operate both in a central role or as a left-back.
The 27-year-old has been a consistent presence for Getafe this season and could provide the strength and experience that Tottenham’s defense currently lacks, especially as Cristian Romero’s performances have also been below standard this season.
Radu Dragusin, signed last winter, is the only other natural center-back available to Postecoglou, who has also utilized Ben Davies in central defense.
In eScored’s view, acquiring a new defensive player is crucial for Postecoglou, whose squad is underperforming significantly at this moment. While Alderete would indeed offer valuable depth, the challenge of replacing Van de Ven while he is sidelined is much larger.
Unlike some of their competitors, Tottenham’s buildup can leave them vulnerable with only two central defenders in front of the goalkeeper, as Yves Bissouma is not a true No.6, and the full-backs are often too focused on attacking to provide adequate defensive support.
Tottenham must reevaluate their entire defensive setup. Both Romero and Van de Ven seem like players who would benefit from a more composed partner, a type of player who might be found at Arsenal, Liverpool, or Manchester City. Therefore, Spurs should perhaps aim to recruit a leader in defense and tackle the underlying structural issues instigated by Postecoglou’s aggressive style of play.
Alderete is valued at just €5 million, according to Transfermarkt. Spurs face Southampton this weekend when Premier League action resumes.
