Wolves Extend Premier League’s Longest Winless Streak

Igor Jesus’ first Premier League goal resulted in a 1-0 defeat for Wolves against Nottingham Forest at Molineux on Wednesday night.

The defeat leaves Rob Edwards’ team at the bottom of the table, still in search of their first win after 14 matches. Wolves have accumulated only two points this season (D2 L12), marking the joint-lowest ever at this stage of a top-flight campaign (adjusted to three points for a win), equaling Sheffield United’s start in 2020/21. This is also the first time Wolves have gone without a victory in their opening 14 matches since the 1983/84 season.

This disappointing start places Wolves among the longest winless runs to begin a Premier League season:

Wolves’ current plight ranks them among the poorest starts in Premier League history. Only three teams have had worse season openings: Sheffield United, who were winless in their first 17 games in 2020/21; QPR, with 16 games without a win in 2012/13; and Swindon Town, who failed to win in 15 matches back in 1993/94.

Wolves now share the 14-match record with Newcastle United’s 2021/22 side, marking the fourth-longest winless start in Premier League history. With unfavorable results around the league, Wolves find themselves 12 points adrift at the bottom.

A variety of factors have contributed to this downturn, and without significant improvements, Wolves risk returning to the Championship. They may also threaten the record for the fewest points in a single Premier League season.

This dubious distinction belongs to Derby County, who only managed 11 points in the 2007/08 season, winning just once in 38 matches and losing 29.

Next, Wolves will face Manchester United at Molineux, aiming to reverse their fortunes before traveling to the Emirates to challenge Premier League leaders Arsenal.
