Sunderland Poised to Compete with Bundesliga Clubs for Defender

Sunderland faces potential competition from Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach for the transfer of highly-rated Club Brugge defender Jorne Spileers.

The Black Cats are currently enjoying a strong position in the Premier League, sitting seventh in the standings, and a former striker recently mentioned that it would take a ‘monumental collapse’ for them to be relegated.

Regis Le Bris has brought in several players during the summer transfer window, focusing on youth in order to build a competitive squad. Nevertheless, Sunderland is still keen to add another center-back after missing out on Jhon Lucumi.

It is reported that they are unlikely to pursue Lucumi in the upcoming transfer window.

The interest in signing another defender remains, and Le Bris is now looking towards Belgium.

Spileers, a 20-year-old defender from Club Brugge, has been linked with Sunderland, marking another instance of his name circulating in discussions around a Premier League move.

In 2023, scouts from Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur monitored the promising Belgian centre-back, but they did not proceed with an offer, and there are no indications that they plan to do so.

Spileers has made 87 appearances for Club Brugge and has played three times in the Champions League this season.

However, Sunderland is likely to encounter rivalry for his signature, as German outlet Radio Mercato reports that Borussia Monchengladbach is also interested.

The Bundesliga side has struggled at the start of the season, and their new manager Eugen Polanski has recognized Spileers’ potential.

Gladbach may present an attractive offer to Spileers, positioning his development within the Bundesliga as a promising pathway to advancement in his career.

The German club might want to initiate discussions soon if they intend to secure Spileers’ signing.

Sunderland has shown a keen interest in young talent, and their investments in a number of youngsters during the summer transfer window have yielded positive results.
