In a battle of wills at the Riverside, Burnley squandered a prime opportunity to ascend into the Championship’s automatic promotion slots, as they were held to a frustrating goalless draw by a resilient Middlesbrough side.

The stakes were high; a victory would have catapulted them into second place following Sheffield United‘s earlier stalemate against West Bromwich Albion. However, the usually reliable Josh Brownhill let slip a pair of golden chances in the second half, leaving the Clarets to ponder what could have been.

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough, with Finn Azaz’s effort forcing a commendable save from James Trafford, maintained their position in the playoff fight, moving back into the top six on goal difference above Watford.

Yet, despite that point, it’s now just one win in six outings for Michael Carrick’s men, with two of those matches ending in stalemates against Scott Parker’s Burnley in a three-week window.

Burnley’s last sojourn to Riverside resulted in jubilant scenes as they celebrated promotion to the Premier League last April. After a brief stay in the top tier, the Clarets are now keenly pursuing another ascent to elite status.

Key figures from that victorious night, such as Connor Roberts, Josh Cullen, and captain Brownhill, have become indispensable elements of Parker’s setup, mirroring their pivotal roles under Vincent Kompany during the previous promotion quest.

This season, Burnley’s foundation has been built on an impenetrable defense that boasts the best record in the division, having conceded a mere nine goals in the first half of the season.

In contrast, while Boro are second only to leaders Leeds United in scoring, their defensive frailties have reared their ugly heads, conceding three goals in three of their last four contests.

A particularly galling moment came on Boxing Day, where they let a three-goal cushion slip to draw at home with Sheffield Wednesday. The toll of that disappointment coupled with injuries to forward Tommy Conway and goalkeeper Sol Brynn looms large in their campaign.

With Brynn sidelined due to a dislocated shoulder, Australian Tom Glover made his first appearance since February, delivering a commendable performance that included a crucial save to thwart Burnley’s Josh Laurent as the visitors started brightly.

Early on, Burnley dictated possession and signaled their intent, but not without a couple of wayward attempts from Jaidon Anthony and Brownhill.

Boro’s Emmanuel Latte Lath unsuccessfully headed over after some deft wing play by rising star Ben Doak, but the most noteworthy chance of the half fell to Delano Burgzorg, who capitalized on a rare Burnley defensive lapse. After CJ Egan-Riley failed to clear his lines, Burgzorg seized the opportunity, only to lash his shot well wide from a promising position.

The breakthrough Burnley sought surfaced just shy of the hour mark, as desperation crept into the game. Under pressure from Zian Flemming, Glover only managed a half-hearted punch that fell invitingly to Brownhill.

Positioned ten yards from goal, Brownhill’s effort was heroically blocked on the line by Dael Fry, whose reaction saved Boro from what appeared a certain goal.

The momentum shifted momentarily as Azaz tested Trafford with a curling effort from inside the box, raising the intensity as Boro threatened to take the lead. Yet Brownhill, in a twist of fate, squandered an even clearer opening moments later. An excellent run from Anthony down the right found Brownhill unmarked, but from a mere ten yards out, he shot over the bar, a miss that lingered painfully in his mind.

With his head held in his hands, Brownhill embodied the disappointment of a Clarets side that couldn’t translate defensive solidity into an indomitable attacking presence. With this goalless draw marking their sixth of the season, they must rediscover a clinical edge in front of goal if they are to clinch that coveted automatic promotion spot in the months to come.

‘A good step forward’ – reaction

Middlesbrough head coach Michael Carrick shared his thoughts post-match with BBC Radio Tees:

“That was a real, proper game tonight.

“I know it wasn’t a high level in terms of entertainment or excitement or goalmouth action, but there was a lot of top level stuff in the game, testing each other in different ways and having to deal with different problems and finding solutions.

“I really enjoyed the game. The boys were fantastic in what we asked them to do against a really good team and I thought it was a good step forward for us.”
