Barcelona Takes Significant Steps to Secure Milan Star Rafael Leao Next Summer
In a move that sends ripples across European football, La Liga giants Barcelona appear poised to intensify their pursuit of AC Milan’s marquee forward, Rafael Leao. Recent reports from Calciomercato indicate that Los Blaugranas are gearing up for a decisive bid at the culmination of the current season.
Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta, has taken a strategic step by engaging the services of Portuguese super-agent Jorge Mendes to facilitate this deal. Mendes has made no secret of his ambition to lure Leao from the hallowed grounds of San Siro; however, the winger’s contract, which runs until 2028, could complicate matters.
This long-term commitment significantly strengthens Milan’s hand in negotiations, especially considering the burgeoning relationship between Leao and new head coach Paulo Fonseca. While their connection was fraught with tension initially, both parties have evidently found a fruitful working relationship, underscoring Leao’s pivotal role in Fonseca’s vision for the team.
Indeed, the Rossoneri have placed a hefty €175 million price tag on Leao, reflecting his status as a club linchpin. Following his contract renewal in 2023, the Portuguese international was handed a staggering €7 million net annual salary, clearly establishing him as Milan’s highest-paid player and a player integral to their long-term plans.
On the other hand, Barcelona, in their quest for rejuvenation, is scouring the market for a reliable forward. After their failed attempt to recruit Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams last summer—due largely to an exorbitant price tag—they seem to have shifted their sights to Leao.
However, matching Leao’s steep asking price presents a formidable challenge for Barcelona, especially in light of their ongoing financial turmoil. The club is already grappling with compliance issues under La Liga’s Financial Fair Play regulations, recently leading to Dani Olmo’s impending departure due to inability to register his contract. This precarious situation further complicates their bid for one of Serie A’s most electrifying talents.
