Atalanta Edges Out Empoli 3-2 in Serie A Thriller

In-form Atalanta clinched a dramatic late winner against Empoli, positioning themselves firmly at the apex of Serie A as Christmas approaches.

Despite the spirited performance from mid-table Empoli, who initially surged ahead through a well-timed volley from Lorenzo Colombo—masterfully set up by Scot Liam Henderson—Atalanta’s resilience shone through.

The Bergamo side equalized thanks to a spectacular diving header from Charles De Ketelaere, before Ademola Lookman handed them the lead just before the half-time whistle, a pivotal moment that shifted the game’s dynamics.

Empoli retaliated valiantly, equalizing once again via a penalty from Sebastiano Esposito. However, it was De Ketelaere who proved to be the hero, netting the decisive goal late in the second half that secured all three points for Atalanta.

With this latest triumph, Atalanta has amassed an astonishing 11 consecutive wins in Serie A, now sitting two points clear of second-placed Napoli as they gear up for their upcoming clash against fourth-placed Lazio on December 28.

Historically, Atalanta is yet to taste Serie A glory, with their cabinet holding just two major trophies: the 1963 Coppa Italia and last season’s impressive Europa League run.

Reflecting on the year, coach Gian Piero Gasperini remarked, “It’s been a wonderful year – we’re sorry it’s ending. Let’s hope that 2025 will be just as good. It won’t be easy, but beyond the results I’m very happy with the spirit that there is in this team.”
