Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City: Martin Zubimendi’s January Transfer Decision Unveiled After Significant Change of Plans
Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City are all keenly observing the latest developments regarding Martin Zubimendi.
The Basque midfielder is on the radar of all three clubs, having turned down a move to Anfield last summer to be Arne Slot’s inaugural signing. The Euro 2024 champion opted to stay with Real Sociedad, demonstrating loyalty to the La Liga side, while his teammate Mikel Merino made a transfer to Arsenal.
The Gunners have also shown interest in Zubimendi, having had their offer turned down earlier this year.

Besides Liverpool and Arsenal, Manchester City is also reportedly interested in Zubimendi.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported this week that, “Manchester City could pursue him in January to cover for Rodri’s absence, but if a transfer is to happen, it is expected to occur at the end of the season”.
Despite Ornstein indicating that “multiple reliable sources” suggest the 25-year-old is now receptive to a transfer, TBR has exclusively reported that Zubimendi is set to stay in San Sebastian until the end of the season, meaning he won’t be an option to replace Rodri during the January window.
This scenario could lead to increased competition for his signature. Slot might reconsider pursuing the player as a long-term No.6 in his lineup.
Arsenal could also re-enter the fray. With Jorginho and Thomas Partey’s contracts expiring in 2025, and with their interest in La Real’s sporting director Roberto Olabe potentially tilting the scales in their favor.
In eScored’s view, Ornstein is a highly respected figure in the industry, and his insights should be heeded. A competitive battle for Zubimendi appears imminent – possibly expanding if Real Madrid or Barcelona enter the scene.
Nevertheless, Real Sociedad will not be able to demand a premium price for the midfielder as he has a release clause. The main contention will revolve around salary and convincing the player of a project, with any club signing Zubimendi facing a fee of €51 million, unless he signs a new contract prior to June 1.
Zubimendi is currently valued at €60m by Transfermarkt.
