Arne Slot Backs Andy Robertson Following Expensive Red Card in Fulham Stalemate
Liverpool’s head coach Arne Slot has expressed his support for left-back Andy Robertson following his significant red card in .
Robertson received a direct red card just 17 minutes into the match after committing a last-man foul on Harry Wilson, unable to control an attempted interception before lunging to avert a direct goal-scoring opportunity.
With Liverpool already trailing 1-0 at that point, it presented a significant challenge for the Reds, who managed to secure a point thanks to a late equalizer from substitute Diogo Jota.
After the match, Slot suggested that Robertson was attempting to recover from a knock he sustained earlier and may not have been at his peak physical state when he confronted Wilson’s attack.
“What the team exhibited, the character they showed, is also what Robbo displayed,” Slot remarked. “Sometimes when you take a hit like that, two studs on a knee, it can be painful for a bit. Then, if you keep running, it gradually improves, or so we hoped.”
“Especially since I had just one defender available on the bench, who wasn’t even a left-back. So, we were optimistic he could push through, and I thought he managed it quite well, but I knew he wasn’t quite himself when they played the ball behind him, and he began to sprint.”
Slot added: “He was able to head it back to Ali [Alisson], but at that moment, I thought, ‘Let’s see how he handles this,’ and it wasn’t long after that before he received the red card. I don’t blame him for it; he showed commendable character as he wanted to continue despite that significant knee impact. Sadly, it resulted in a deserved red card.”
Since Robertson was sent off for denying a goal-scoring chance rather than violent conduct, he will serve only a one-match suspension, missing the upcoming Carabao Cup quarter-final against Southampton.
