Is Chloe Kelly Poised to Depart Man City During the Transfer Window?
Chloe Kelly has faced challenges at Manchester City this season.
The England international, who netted the decisive goal at the Euros in 2022 to help the Lionesses lift the trophy, has struggled to find playing time and has also missed matches due to concussion.
The 26-year-old’s contract with the Sky Blues expires at the end of the season, but will she depart the club? Here’s everything you need to know.
Chloe Kelly: Will she remain at Manchester City?
Speculation regarding Kelly’s future at Manchester City started in October when it became evident that she had a solid role on the bench at the beginning of the 2024/25 season.
The Daily Mail reported that while Kelly wished to continue with City, issues in her relationship with manager Gareth Taylor had hindered the agreement of a contract extension.
Taylor addressed the report, labeling it a “non-event” and stated, “It just beggars belief really that people want to focus on that. But Chloe’s been great.
“She’s really working hard, she’s really engaged, she’s really aligned with what we’re doing and she understands, like the rest of the players at the top end of the pitch, that things are slightly different from maybe the last season or two.”
Despite the impact of concussion, Kelly has only made one starting appearance in the Women’s Super League this season, along with five appearances from the bench.
In the previous WSL season, Kelly appeared in 21 matches, with only three of those coming off the bench.
It remains uncertain if she will consider leaving during the winter transfer window, which opens on January 1, but numerous clubs are likely to show interest. In FourFourTwo’s opinion, if Kelly is not part of Taylor’s plans this season, seeking a loan move for the remainder of the campaign would be advisable.
With the European Championships set to take place in the summer of 2025, Kelly will also be eager to gain more playing time. Losing her would be a significant setback for City, especially if she were to depart on a free transfer in the summer.
