Southampton Parts Ways with Manager Russell Martin
Southampton has terminated the contract of manager Russell Martin following the crushing 5-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
The loss, in which , marked Southampton’s 13th defeat out of 16 Premier League matches this season, leaving them nine points from safety.
After earlier in the day—after he suffered a fourth consecutive Premier League defeat against Ipswich Town on Saturday—Southampton chose to make their own change, relieving Martin of his duties after 18 months in charge.
“We can confirm that we have made the tough decision to part ways with our Men’s First Team Manager, Russell Martin,” stated a Southampton announcement. “At the outset of the season, we all recognized the challenges we would encounter as we readjusted to life in the top division, competing in the most prestigious and toughest league globally.
“However, the reality of our situation is evident. The board has supported Russell and his staff and has been open about our expectations. We have all been aligned in acknowledging the urgent need for results to improve.
“We wish to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Russell and his staff for their hard work and commitment to the club on and off the pitch over the past 18 months. Everyone affiliated with Southampton FC will carry wonderful memories of last season, particularly the Play-Off Final victory in May.”
Following the announcement of under-21s manager Simon Rusk taking over on an interim basis, the Saints added: “Internally, we are encouraged by the ongoing development of talent emerging from our Academy. We take pride in the contributions our young players are making and are confident this will continue to be a source of strength and pride for everyone connected with the club.
“We are also incredibly thankful for the unwavering support and positivity expressed by our fans.
