Jamie Carragher Reveals Efforts to Uncover Mo Salah’s Contract Status, Asserts the Star Will Remain at Liverpool
Jamie Carragher, a former defender turned pundit for the club, believes that Mo Salah’s limited options will keep him on Merseyside. During his appearance on the Stick to Football podcast, Carragher even mentioned that he attempted to gather insights from the club regarding the situation.
“I’ve tried to get information from the club because I knew I’d be asked about it, but they’re not giving anything away,” he stated. “In my opinion, he should continue with the same salary and sign a two-year deal. The club might be proposing just one year, while he might be seeking three – we are unaware of the exact details.”
Carragher further opines that a shortage of authentic options will likely result in the 32-year-old forward extending his contract. “I admire Mo Salah; he’s among the top players globally, but my reasoning is based on his age.
‘He’s not ready to go to Saudi Arabia’
“When you’re making that kind of money, a pay raise isn’t just 10 or 20 thousand a week. Real Madrid has several forwards, Barcelona is struggling financially, PSG is far from being the team Liverpool is – only four or five clubs have a realistic shot at winning the Champions League, and Liverpool is among them.
“He’ll stay, as there aren’t many realistic alternatives. He’s not ready to move to Saudi Arabia – he can consider that in three years. Salah is highly motivated as a player to achieve the record for most goals – or whatever that might be for Liverpool.”
Currently, Salah’s contract is estimated to be between £350,000 and £400,000 per week, with discussions reportedly underway. Last month, Salah remarked that he had not yet received a new contract offer and felt he was probably ‘more out than in’ with The Reds.
The circumstances are further complicated as two additional star players, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, are also facing contract expiration. Carragher suggests that their situations will be handled differently than Salah’s.
“Consider this: Mo Salah earns £350,000-£400,000 a week – Liverpool acquired him for £40 million. Trent is probably earning half of that, and he cost nothing, but there’s no sign in the Kop saying, ‘Give Trent his due’ and there never will be one.
“I remember when Michael Owen left for Real Madrid; Steve McManaman did the same, but was not thought of in the same light – as a local player, you are often viewed as though you should feel grateful to represent the club. ‘This is your club – who do you think you are?’ This sentiment about Trent will arise, and I can guarantee that the fans won’t be saying, ‘Give him what he wants’; rather, it will be, ‘Who does he think he is?’”
Carragher maintains that Salah, who is currently ranked at number 7 in FourFourTwo’s list of the top players globally, should continue with Liverpool under the same conditions, possibly with a two-year contract, though this is a point for discussion.
In eScored’s view, the situation is sensitive, and it’s noteworthy that Mo Salah seems to be the only one publicly addressing his contract compared to Virgil Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who find themselves in a similar position.
This may indicate that Salah is seeking better terms, which could challenge Liverpool. Nevertheless, Salah’s performance this season has strengthened his case significantly.
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure is unlikely to relieve the wage budget significantly, as opposed to Van Dijk or Salah leaving, although Alexander-Arnold seems more likely to exit, potentially toward Real Madrid.
The player himself expressed to me in January his ambitions to be recognized as the best player worldwide. Achieving that goal would likely require a prominent move, and Real Madrid presents such an opportunity.
Considering his relationship with Jude Bellingham, along with the current phase of his career, and Real Madrid possibly seeking a long-term solution for 32-year-old right-back Dani Carvajal, I foresee Alexander-Arnold departing, Van Dijk staying under similar conditions, and Salah remaining with improved terms.
