Roy Keane Supports Marcus Rashford’s Desire to Leave Manchester United, Believing a Change Could Benefit Him
Roy Keane thinks that Marcus Rashford’s departure from Manchester United could be ‘a world of good’ for him.
Rashford, who expressed to Henry Winter earlier this week that he is now prepared for a new challenge, is likely to be sidelined once again from Ruben Amorim’s squad as Manchester United gears up to face Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup tonight.
The England international is reportedly drawing interest from clubs in Spain and Saudi Arabia, as uncertainty looms over his future ahead of the January transfer window.
Roy Keane suggests Marcus Rashford should move from Old Trafford
“[Regarding Marcus Rashford’s interview with Henry Winter] I actually don’t mind what he said, even though it’s a bit lengthy; it’s quite accurate,” Keane shared while on the Stick to Football podcast, presented by Sky Bet.
“Occasionally, a transfer makes sense for all parties involved – this discussion has been ongoing for a year or two, and while there’s clear talent in him and he’s been a part of the club since childhood, a change might indeed benefit him, along with his team and family, by going abroad.”
Keane himself left Manchester United amidst significant controversy back in 2005, after his falling out with then-manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Although Amorim and Rashford’s relationship is not at a breaking point, the former Sunderland manager indicated that Rashford is unlikely to recapture the form he displayed in the 2022/23 season.
“My only caution for players like him – he [Marcus Rashford] possesses all the qualities required of a footballer. If you lose that desire, regaining it is challenging. For elite players, it’s not about the money – it’s about the new challenge and your self-respect. Marcus seems to have lost his direction and his drive.
“We’ve talked about off-field distractions, and if he’s preoccupied with that, it could be tough to regain his focus. A change of club and environment might rekindle that, but I don’t believe he’ll regain his drive while at United,” he added.
“Some players leave United and excel elsewhere, and people will say [we shouldn’t have sold him]. ‘They’re achieving because the new club suits them better’. I’m not suggesting that Jadon Sancho should return to United – perhaps Chelsea is a more fitting environment for him, since he enjoys being in London, for example.”
In FourFourTwo’s perspective, it now seems probable that Rashford will part ways with his childhood club, whether that occurs in January or during the summer transfer window. Rising talents like Amad and Alejandro Garnacho are expected to ease the transition, with a move for Sporting star Geovany Quenda also believed to be in the works.
Manchester United will look to build on their recent success against Manchester City this weekend, as they face Bournemouth at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday.
