Cast Your Vote for Hero of the Year! eScored’s Alternative Awards 2024

This week has seen the exciting unveiling of eScored’s Alternative Awards for 2024, presenting fresh and diverse categories compared to those highlighted in our latest magazine issue that celebrated the quintessential moments of the past year.

And now, ladies and gentlemen, we arrive at the crowning jewel – Hero of the Year. Our team was tasked with crafting a list of nominations free from any constraints—no rules on who could be selected, nor limits on how many times a candidate could appear on the list. The stage is set for a grand showdown.

So who will walk away with the trophy? The poll awaits your verdict below!

Marco Silva: nominated by James Andrew, editor (@JamesAndrew_)

Simply put, it’s Marco Silva, and desperately needed representation for Fulham in this conversation. For the past four years, he’s been my unwavering Hero of the Year. While rumors about him trekking across the Thames to reach home matches remain unverified, my skepticism is non-existent.

Roy Keane: nominated by Matthew Ketchell, deputy editor (@Ketchell)

He is a must-watch. Keane’s brooding presence on broadcast panels during a Super Sunday captures viewers, and his insights during various England matches are compelling. His ability to balance humor with an unyielding demeanor is magnetic; we’re left wanting more. Who could forget his iconic, “I’ll see you in the car park” moment at Ipswich Town this season? I eagerly await his spirited encounters with the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Manchester United, and wild card topics in 2025.

Julian Nagelsmann: nominated by Ed McCambridge, staff writer (@edmccambridge)

Stepping into the managerial hot seat of the German national team in November 2023, Julian Nagelsmann faced the daunting task of uplifting a squad beleaguered by a lack of quality and confidence in the face of a turbulent European Championship campaign. The astute strategist deftly turned the tide, largely credited to his bold decision to reinstate the illustrious Toni Kroos. Through his tactical genius, he led the hosts to a thrilling tournament, hinting that perhaps with a sprinkle of good fortune, glory could have been theirs.

Bukayo Saka: nominated by Mark White, online content editor (@markwhlte)

There exists a glaring discrepancy in the recognition Bukayo Saka receives, overshadowed by the flashier names in the footballing discourse. He brings more to the table defensively and operates in wider areas, and yet his impact is monumental—22 goals and assists in just 22 fixtures so far this season. Yet, the naysayers, such as Rio Ferdinand and social media skeptics seem relentless in diminishing his achievements, even nitpicking his assists tally because of corner contributions.

Why must he toil doubly hard for a fraction of the accolades? He is not just England’s finest player but Arsenal’s jewel and a shining ambassador for the Premier League.

San Marino’s entire first XI: nominated by Chris Flanagan, senior staff writer (@CFlanaganFFT)

This nomination is for a collective—11 heroes who constitute the San Marino squad that achieved an unprecedented competitive victory against Liechtenstein in September, swiftly followed by a repeat win two months later, solidifying their remarkable ascent in the Nations League. This triumph is the most cerebrally ludicrous promotion you can imagine, and if fortune smiles on them in the World Cup qualifiers, it could catapult them to the playoff spot, inching ever so close to a spot in the World Cup itself. Yes, you read that right—an actual reality!

Cole Palmer: nominated by Ryan Dabbs, senior writer online (@ryandabbs_)

For sheer entertainment value—on and off the pitch—Cole Palmer is the man of the moment. One minute he’s managing an audacious Panenka penalty against Tottenham, the next, he’s dispensing social media gems that showcase his endearing obliviousness—be it munching on chippy chips or busting a move for his sister’s TikTok video. His carefree approach introduces a refreshing twist to the often overly serious personas of Premier League players. Witnessing him sitting nonchalantly on the pitch while chaos unfolded in a Stamford Bridge brawl was a masterclass in casual coolness. What a character, and what an asset!

Cole Palmer: nominated (again) by Ben Marsden, writer (@BenMarsden03)

Let’s be honest—Erling Haaland scoring from six yards out on a weekly basis can become a bit monotonous. Yes, he may well be the greatest goal scorer the Premier League has seen, but amid the relentless output, Cole Palmer stands out. He’s showcasing that flair and creativity can still thrive in a league obsessed with raw metrics. Think of him as the antithesis of Haaland.

His limited time in the Euros Final showcased his potential, contradicting Gareth Southgate’s decision to keep him on the bench. In 2024, the emergence of ‘Cold’ Palmer has resurrected the joyous elements of football that we often miss. All this happens alongside his comical interview blunders, ensuring he’s the full entertainment package. On-field excitement and off-field charm—what more could fans desire?

Ian Wright

Ian Wright emerges as the lone male pundit wielding his platform to elevate women’s football with both insight and respect. His comprehensive understanding of the game transcends barriers as he passionately follows and supports Arsenal women just as fervently as the men. Wright’s commendable efforts for women’s football reflect authentic support that stands free from tokenism. He epitomizes the essence of what football requires, embracing the universal language of the sport, regardless of gender.

David Coote: nominated by Adam Monk, presenter (@_adammonk)

In the world of heroes, sacrifices are often necessary—sometimes taken for the greater good, even when they veer into moral ambiguity. This was particularly true for David Coote in November 2024. After a barrage of international breaks had left fans in a footballing purgatory, Coote stood up to break the gloomy monotony.

His unexpected, quirky revelation enchanted fans, shedding light on the seemingly robotic workings of the PGMOL. It’s almost as if we believed referees were merely automated machines, switched off post-match. But Coote went against that narrative. Much like any true hero, it’s fair to anticipate a day when David Coote makes his dramatic return… on the ‘Diary of a CEO’ podcast, no less, brought to you by Huel.
